Our Story

Dr. Shamim Ibrahim moved to the United States from Pakistan in 1971. At that time there were no existing multilingual and multicultural resources in mental health or other community based service for the overall adjustments for immigrants from South Asia. As necessity arose, Dr. Ibrahim sheltered domestic violence victims in her own home which was not a long term solution. Dr. Ibrahim encouraged by her brother Dr. Nazir Khaja decided to start a non-profit organization to provide adequate assistance to the community. Dr. Ibrahim founded Niswa Association in 1990 to provide the much needed assistance for mental health, education and financial independence for the Muslim community especially women in Southern California.

Since its inception, Niswa has provided a complete suite of services to those who come to its door. Today Niswa provides the services that are needed by so many to stand on their own feet to live the American dream. Niswa counts on the generous support of the community and disburses 100% of all donations for the benefit of the community.
